It’s Hard to Commit – but Here’s to Trying!
By Adam Burns, VP People

Prior to the pandemic, organizations, businesses and entertainment entities alike struggled to lure folks to gather for events. It’s only gotten harder ever since, of course.

As our lives get increasingly busier by the day and distractions continue to present themselves, it’s hard to get away from the house or office for one’s own entertainment. It’s even more difficult to commit to professional development and networking. When a networking or a professional development opportunity pops into our email or social media feed, I typically save it for later.

“Ah, I should look into that,” I say to myself. It’s hard to hit that register button. Let alone actually attend (raise your hand if you’ve registered for an event but a conflict arose!).

It’s a struggle for all of us.

Because let’s face it. We have families, work and clients that are prioritized. A family or work matter always wins. As it should!

But as we work ourselves away from a virtual heavy world, on behalf of the GKC-PRSA board, I’d like to encourage all PR and communications professionals to hit that register button and make networking, professional development, and all the other benefits PRSA has to offer, more of a priority.

It doesn’t – or shouldn’t be the priority – just a priority. Fit it into your schedule.

About 10 individuals did just that during a happy hour on Thursday, April 28, at Taps On Main downtown. A mix of new pros, experienced pros and a PRSSA member – and 2022 Inez Y. Kaiser Memorial Fund Scholar honoree Ladazhia Taylor – networked with some spirits and conversation. It was an enjoyable time for all as we reminisced on our careers, PR, ideas for future events, and quite a bit more.

Look, this isn’t a beg for your attendance or to simply make our time feel valuable. Trust me, I’ll have a beer with or without you. It’s quite simply an invitation and a hope that you’ll experience the true value of your PRSA membership. Plus, we miss a lot of you!

If you have any ideas, questions, concerns, or anything else on your mind, please visit this link and let us know! That’s why we’re here. Thank you for your continued support.

As PRSA celebrates APR Month, the GKC-PRSA chapter celebrates our rich history of supporting the APR program. Since 1997*, dozens of colleagues have achieved the prestigious accredited in public relations (APR) credential through the GKC-PRSA chapter. Today, 30% of our members are APR.
